2:26 am--let the night owling commence

I am so probably pulling an all-nighter tonight! Not just on the computer but I have some housecleaning (minor) to do and a little scrappin'.
This was in my Motherclick Newsletter so I have to share! Harrison pretty much loves his fruits and veggies. He eats those before the main dish! But I like having newer, creative ideas for serving him lunch.
Getting Creative for the Lunch Box
Make your child's lunch as entertaining as it is healthy. Pack food, dipping sauces and homemade snacks in small, colorful containers. Kids love to play, so food should appeal to their sense of fun. Include surprises, like notes or an unexpected favorite food so they look forward to their midday meal. Also buy some small ice packs to tuck in the lunchbox; the ability to chill food will increase your menu options. Here are some more ideas for packing fun into their lunchboxes and putting good food in their bellies:
1. Dip it.
Kids love to dip things, so pack little containers of hummus or bean dip and pita bread. The Mediterranean-inspired dips are packed with protein and a good source of fiber.
Celery sticks with a cottage-cheese salsa dip, baby carrots and yummy salad dressing dip, or apple slices and peanut butter can contribute to the fruits-and-veggies quota.
White Bean Dip
Hummus
Ranch Dip and Baby Carrots
Peaches and Cream
2. Skewer it.
Eating the same old sandwich over and over again is boring. So reinvent it. You can put all the essentials of a sandwich on wood skewers. Thread alternating small chunks of turkey, ham, cheese and bread (add cherry tomatoes for fun) on skewers for a new dimension. This trick also works well with fruit.
Rainbow Veggie Skewers
Pineapple Skewers with Coconut and Mint
Mozzarella, Cherry Tomatoes and Basil Skewers
Chicken and Pineapple Skewers
3. Toss it.
Most kids go nuts for noodles, so pack pasta salads. It's a good way to sneak in vegetables and introduce new flavors.
Pasta Salad with Lemon-Pesto Dressing
Supreme Pizza Pasta Salad
Sesame Noodles with Chicken
4. Wrap it.
Add zip with colored tortillas. Smear red and green ones with a ranch dip or cream cheese and layer in cold cuts. They're tasty, colorful and easy.
Turkey Avocado Wrap
Fresh Fruit Roll Ups
California Wrap Sandwich
Ham and Cheese Pinwheels
5. Bake it.
If all else fails, you know kids will eat dessert. Make healthy dessert bars that give them a treat packed with good nutrition.
Jill Cordes Oatmeal Bars
Peanut Butter Granola Bars
Myrna's Toasted Coconut-Chocolate Bars
Apple and Oatmeal Crisp
Find these recipes and other fun lunchbox tips from the Food Network.
Today was perfect Fall weather. I tried to get H to go somewhere but he refused--even Chuck E. Cheese! (Remember yesterday?) I did get him out to go feed the ducks at the library's pond. We came home, did some painting...orange was his favorite color choice today. I loved that he made an "orange oval!" and it did look like an oval. Then he started slamming his hand on the paper and I asked what he was making--"High fives for daddy!" So funny. We watched a little Shrek. We ate some macaroni and cheese. Ben came home and told me he is already counting down for summer vacation! We made some sugar cookies together as a family (in our hillbilly still under construction kitchen). We drank some chocolate milk with our cookies. We talked about our weekend plans and planned yet another trip to Lowe's Home Improvement store. I like days like this where not major happens!

It has been raining here all day. I really love the rain. Mucho! Above is a pic I took of a local house (IMHO the prettiest one in town!). I was also driving down the street near one of our smaller airports and saw they had rolled hay bales in their fields so I stopped and took some pics. I like how they look against the cloudy sky.

Here are some pics from last week when Harrison and I went to a local park. We are pretty lucky that there are a ton of parks here and they are all new! I don't miss those metal slides that would burn your butt on a summer day!

for H...

This morning we made our way to a consignment sale but only walked out with 2 items...both Thomas,--one was a set and another was a flashlight that makes noise and rolls. Pretty cool.

We had a bit of a schizo day. Hey, as a sahm (stay-at-home mom) it happens! Just H and I were both moody. We probably had no business in public (do we ever? LOL). We got home, bathed, put on comfy clothes and just chilled watching Spongebob (totally uneducational! but worth the treat). Oh, and we found the giant bag Ben hid full of Halloween candy. We sampled some. You have to make sure you are giving good quality candy to the neighbors! The only thing I would not have bought would have been the Tootsie Roll mix...yuk! But we approve the 3 Musketeers, m and m packs, Hot Tamales, Whoppers, Now and Later and Starbursts--no, we did not sample ALL those but it was tempting!

One really nice thing about the sale we went to was the goodie bag the woman gave us at the register. It had makeup samples, candy (we did not need more!?!), nail files, pen, paper pad and some anti-aging treatment. That was really cool. I love surprises!

H found a Chuck E Cheese token in my scrap room and started running around the living room saying, "C'mon mom. Let's go do lunch! Chuck E Cheeeeessseee!". I am thinking about taking him tomorrow. Just because today was so blah! And I can't resist the giant rat when he comes out and dances!

Crikey!

My son wore these last summer. They are cute and supposedly comfy (I don't own a pair), but according to Yahoo! News, you may not want your little one wearing a pair near escalators!

Mama sings the blues

This was our day yesterday:
I am preparing breakfast for H when he happily trots into the living room and declares, "Mmmm...breakfast! Sugar is grrrreat!". He has his hands elbow deep in a bag of sugar! (We have been keeping our dry/canned goods in a huge cabinet in his room). So I wash him up. After he eats his REAL breakfast we head to Hobby Lobby.
I try to avoid taking him to HL at all costs, but hey sometimes we gotta leave the house! HL is situated next to WalMart. Grrr. So the whole time we are walking in he is crying and saying,"That waaaaay." while pointing in the direction of WalMart.
Of course, I hear, "Who brings a kid into HL?" and I ignore it while I think," Okay. My son needs to learn how to behave properly in public. Is he going to learn that holed up in the house? NO! He will learn it through real-life experiences. And I can't always cater to him--he needs to learn that he cannot always get his way. AND he does not act this way everytime we go to a store. Must have something to do with his breakfast!?!"
So he calms down and since I was only popping in for one item we go to the check out line without anymore calamity. If you have never been in Hobby Lobby or any craft store during the day here is something you should know. Those stores are loaded with rich woman who stay at home without children and have nothing better to do than buy useless overprice knick knacks and ponder where to eat their salad for lunch or which body part to alter with plastic surgery next. NOT everyone--sometimes a true blue crafter is in there or a crazed sahm, but this time it was just the first kind.
There is only one lane open and of course, it is the slow as molasses cashier who looks like she might die at the register. I practice patience...practice, practice, practice. The lady in front of me is only getting 2 posters. Why is is taking an hour? Remember the first kind of lady? She gets in line behind me with her one (ugly) platter. Her nose is in the air--it really is! H spots some pumpkins and starts saying loudly," Pumpkins, mama, pumpkins! Look!" He was not running around the store. He was not fighting me for candy at the register. He was not touching all those ridiculous glass displays. I think his behavior in the line was A minus, not even a B. So we offend first lady with ugly platter because she walks out of line and puts the platter back. She had only been in line less than 3 seconds! Either it was us or molasses cashier or a combo. I was holding H and I said," I think we scared that lady off"--as she was leaving the store (I did not see her walking past us when I said that). It's okay-I said a silent prayer for her to get that stick removed from her butt soon.
We left that chaos and went to Target after I gave H the speech that any running people out of line would result in us just leaving the store and coming home. He was superexcellent at Target.
Here is my point: For those of you who don't have kids, you will someday. They will embarass you in public. You have to ask yourself sometimes, "Do I really need toilet paper or can it wait until I can get a sitter/dh comes home?" Don't feel guilty if your child does goes berserk. If you are at least trying to deal with it by talking to the child or removing them for the situation, that is better than nothing.
There are certain places you will never go again until child is 16 yo. That would be the movie theater, and sit down restaurants. Maybe we should put Hobby Lobby on that list.
And yes, sometimes you have to just leave the store. Or bribe.(Or leave).
Really tag-teaming works best. Ben and I often do the shopping together so one can leave with the child if needed or one stays home with child while the other goes.
Anyway, if you are a child-free shopper it is best if you ignore the mom dealing with the tantrum. Do not offer advice, scold the kid yourself (unless it is a serious safety issue) or hiss/glare at mom (because we bite!). I bet she is already embarassed and guilt-filled enough for the whole store.
Lesson for the day.

Keira Knightley hates photography!

Keira Knightley says being photographed is destroying her soul. The 'Atonement' star believes a part of her dies every time she is snapped by the paparazzi. She said: "I believe the Aborigines say that every photo takes away a bit of your soul. It's very odd but I think there's definitely some truth in that." The 22-year-old actress also revealed she is reluctant to face the camera lens because she suffers from acne. She said: "I look in the mirror and go, 'Oh no! More spots, more acne!' And I'm not comfortable being photographed when I'm being myself."

Mommy brain drain

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket
I had a total brain fart and forgot what day it was! I need a coffee IV, too.
Yesterday we played at the park for 2 hours! Today we spent half the day at the zoo. I am going to have to share pics with you soon. My legs are sore from all the walking at the zoo!
My mom did get that dream job. I get to have her around more-yay! I started thinking...maybe I can leave Harrison with her and actually go to the store! I temporarily found myself fantasizing about drinking coffee in some exotic cafe. A tantrum-free zone! Then my bubble burst when I realized I would be alone doing it because my IRL friends have kids with them, too!
Maybe I should start a countdown about how long it will take until I get in trouble hanging out with my mom--THE shopping enabler--with dh as far as finances are concerned!
We watched Kid Nation tonight. It was better than I thought it would be until that little boy started crying and wanted to go home. That was upsetting!
I watched Oprah today. Justin (ah, Justin) Timberlake was on there. He is so secretive. Spill the Britney dirt, already!
Remember our sweet kitten Kitson? I think he has become possessed!?!?! He is constantly biting, clawing, trying to eat human food (what?). And he kicks his food out of his cage when we lock him in it for bad behavior. I think I need a cat whisperer...or cat exorcist!

Pictures make my day...

Here are the latest pictures of our crazy life...
Okay, here are all the machines and tubes they hooked up in our kitchen to purify it after the leak and all that drama!
They put several layers of plastic sheeting up so nothing could pass through in the air and tubes sucked the bad air out. Weird!

Yuk! I've had enough kitchen talk to last me a lifetime!Harrison and I feed the local geese at the park. We have pretty much adopted them. We are so crazy we go out and feed them even when it snows and ices! It is good to have family rituals.

We went majorly overboard decorating for Halloween (yup, we know it is early). Since I was a teacher I had a ton of decorations I had bought for my classroom and now Harrison has inherited them.

We love our Pirate Pumpkin the best! (Bought the foamy face stick-ons at Michaels Craft Stores near some solid color buckets). It came with a googly eye but we lost it so we stuck a foam spider on it (Halloween foam stickers..164 pack! at Dollar Tree for $1!!!).
